So I'm planning a trip to AI the 2nd weekend in October. I've been fishing my whole life in the freshwaters of WV, but the surf provides challenges which are unknown to me. Here's my gear, want you experienced fellas to let me know if it's enough or if I should make changes.

9' mh ugly stick
Penn fierce2 6000
Unlined

7' mh loomis
Spinning quantum cabo 40
10 lb breaking strength power pro with backing of course

6'6 xh penn
Penn defiance 40lw
40 lb mono

7' m cabelas rod (can't remember)
Baitcasting quantum cabo 20
Unlined

And a few other quantums on 6 to 6'6 medium rods with 8' breaking strength braid

9' rod you will use for surf fishing, Put 20# mono or what ever braid you like on the Fierce. Get your self some Fish finder or cannon ball rigs from Capt Steve in Chincoteauge . 7' rod use for surf fishing for smaller fish, Whiting, sml blues, or any thing big that bites. Use a top n bottom rig or a whiting rig. I like a little more heaver line on that reel. 15# mono or braid . Set 9' rod up for red drum or stripers. I'll be down there for a week , 10/2 to 10/10. Don't bring too many rods, work the to rods mentioned, after casting set your drags light so a big drum won't take your rod with it.Tight lines.

+1 on everything above. You could set up the xh penn/defiance 40lw for small to medium sharks if you're so inclined. I'd also grab some glass minnows and/or stingsilvers to throw while you're waiting for you're rods to bend. Good luck!

Threadjack - What is AI? I assume it is A______ Island but which one?

As to your question I agree with most of what hunter1 said with a couple exceptions if I was going to go to the beach fishing. I do not know where you are going but this would work fishing from Ga to the outer banks
I would use 17# mono on the Fierce 6000. Not much more line but it will give you more if you get a good runner.
I agree with the 7'0 Loomis, 20-30# braid will be best with good floro leader (17-20#)
As for the the others leave them at home. 2 will be plenty. Unless you are planning on Shark fishing the XH and the boat rod will not serve you much good. While at the beach be on the look out for a heaver (12'+ 8-12oz) or a metal rod (8.5'-9' 1/2-2oz).

AI, MD. the sharks there have pretty much moved out by now but the drum and rock will be moving in. Also if you plan on being on the beach at night, bring some cold weather gear (it gets bone chilling cold at night on the beach in October) Buck's place or Alltackle on rt 50 is where you want to go for supplies

First and foremost i appreciate the advice.
I absolutely plan on shark fishing. i built a bait launcher and figured i could use it to get the bait out to whatever distance i needed beyond the sandbar which is how i was planning to cast the 6'6 xh. i also agree that more poles isnt always better but i always bring backups incase of a failure. i have plenty of cold weather gear so that wont be an issue.

Thing is , Fishing for sharks that time of year ,you probably will just be soaking bait. Always go with what's running and set your tackle up to catch them. If you hook a Big bull drum, you will have enough on your hands bringing him in. Tight lines.

Not being familiar with AI, inside or outside of the Park area, but a quick scan of the State Park rules says that bait launchers are limited for use in a certain area only. Tried to copy just that part of the rules to bring here to no avail, so you might want to follow up on that.
Also not personally familiar with any bait launching devices, but mostly recognize in videos that they are being used with spinning reels. Have you tested your model with your levelwind conventional? Just doesn't seem like a good pairing, though I have seen a video of a slingshot launching line wrapped around a bucket from a conventional. I'm a purist and cast my own bait, so that's about all the help I can offer on those contraptions.

IMHO

You're going need a 12' rod rated at 8 - 12oz and a 3-5' sand spike. You will want keep your line out of the surf/waves.

At AI most of the time your going to need 6oz or more to hold bottom.
