It seems like everyone is catching lots of fish right now. Lots of trout and red drum being posted on my facebook so it has me a bit antsy to try my luck. I'm going to try fishing the inlet tomorrow around 10:00am. High tide is around 9:00 so Im going to try the high tide and fish through the tide change till dark. I just had a few questions to ask for anyone who has been fishing lately. Is everyone catching fish with shrimp, live mullet, cut mullet, or one in particular? I'm not very familiar with saltwater artificials but I'm pretty flexible if this is what's catching everything. I planned on anchoring outside of the grass to catch the predators coming out the grass. I am going to carolina rig off the bottom because I never have any luck with bobbers off the top even though I know this is popular with trout. Does anyone have any advice that could help me catch one? It's my first fishing excursion of October because of so much work recently.

I dont know if it matters I'll be using 40lb braid and mono leaders with 2ounce weights because of the moving water.

Thanks everyone, tight lines!

I always used 25 lb fluoro with a 1/0 Owner SSW hook and a mud minnow or shrimp inshore. No way you should need 2 oz unless you're on the jetties on a tide change. The water can be scary fast then. 1/2 oz should be plenty in the creeks... Stop at Perry's or the Outpost and get some bait and ask them where the bite is.

Thank you so much for the response! I was trying to stay away from the jetties because I dont like all the pen fish, so I'll try your advice in the creeks. Do you float with the current or anchor out? I've tried some research tonight and most say not to anchor and float with the tide.

We always anchored or trolled for flounder. Depends on what you're targeting. Always heard kayak guys talk about having a DOA shrimp behind them just dragging along while fishing in the creeks, picks up some trout or drum.

Don't discount the jetties if you're comfortable with going out there, I got a 8 lb flounder there in November a few years ago. Should be plenty of drum out there. If the small stuff is bad grab a pack of 4" gulp shrimp in pearl or new penny and fish it on the lightest jighead you can get down there. They can't just pull the tail off like a curly tail gulp.

Update!! Thanks for your help, but we got skunked. We tried a few different places using shrimp and cut mullet off the bottom. I changed it up a few times and used a DOA shrimp on a popping cork to no avail. Also didnt catch anything on jigheaded plastic bait. We made it out to the jetties, but it seemed like today was the day of the pinfish. We had a lot of fun just not to be working, but maybe next time we will snag a few keepers. There were tons of boats on the water, and I hope experience brought them more success! Tight lines!

We were out in a boat in the inlet Saturday, about the only thing that was biting were spots, hitting bloodworms and bloodworm fishbites. We tried in the creeks, around the inside of the south jetti, etc., finally anchored in the mouth of the inlet just off the Garden City point and started catching spot. Put 71 in the cooler, and one whiting about 14" long. Couldn't get anything except pinfish to bite shrimp or mullet, ended up giving up and just fished for the spot. Was hoping for some drum or something bigger, but nothing.
