Just tried to attach the Mitchell 302 my neighbor gave me to a surf rod to wind on some line, and it would not fit my TASR 13-ft. The foot of the reel was too long and almost too wide. Hmmm...broke out my Tsunami Air Wave 12-ft, nope...no fit. Well, heck, how about the new Tommy Farmer 13-ft....no way.

Went out to the shed and tried an old worn out inexpensive Shakespeare 12-ft and yep..it fit just fine.

Must be a FUJI reel seat problem.

What surf rod are you big Mitchell fans using?

Some of the new style reel seat are too small for older reels...designed for the new smaller reels or conventionals. When i have my surf rods made i use the old style Fuji seats which will hold the old Mitchells.(ive had 386/488 on them).Seen others with your issue.
