I love my Shimano Stradic CI4+ 3000 at 7 ounces. It's strong enough to catch decent size stripers while plugging. I looked around a lot for a very light reel and smooth. This was it! If you are looking for something cheaper, then look into Okuma Helios at 6.8oz. Penn Clash is the lightest in it's class.

If you want Walmart cheap, then get a Shakespeare Alpha Spinning Reel for $12 for surf fishing. It's very light and works great. I've caught over 100 rockfish this year on it and it held up pretty well. They sell it at Walmart separately or combo at Dick's.

You don't really need a really light reel unless you are walking the dog a lot. Casting over and over isn't going to tire you out as much as your retrieve style. Hold your rod with your arm extended straight down so you don't have to hold your rod and reel weight up straining your arm and elbow.

I second that. I fish for hours with my Shimano Stradic with out tiring out the arm. Silky smooth retrieve. If price is an issue, I have a couple of the Shimano Sedona's that are only about $49, and they are a great smooth little reel far superior to other reels in that price range. They're a great alternative to the more expensive Shimano's.

I use both the smoke and smoke inshore, not much of a difference between the two, I think it's mostly aesthetic... however the point being for jigging and casting I wouldn't trade mine for anything else. Switched from Shimano spinners which I still use in larger classes of reels but for what I do, I think the smokes are awesome.

The Battle II is hard to beat for the $ but...top of the line in Penn is the Clash- and still a lot less than a Stradix- I have four Stradix and now a Penn Clash 3000- I absolutely love the Clash- paired it up with a Penn Regiment 7' 8-15# rod- nice light-weight smooth as silk inshore saltwater all-around everything outfit

Do you have a budget? I agree with the Stradic and Battle, I own one or more of each and they are good reels for the money. If you want to spend less I would recommend a Penn Fierce. I have two 7' spinning combos one with a Battle and the other a Fierce. Been fishing both for a few years and there is very little noticeable difference between the reels.

The only Penn any good is the spin fisher. All the rest have open spools and if you fish a lot you will have problems with the other junk. The last 3 stradics I got are junk too. I'm currently trying the new Akios reels and they are holding up well so far.
