Are reds and trouts leader shy?

30 lbs fluorocarbon leader is no match for toothy blues, I want to use 80 to 100 lbs mono or .012" titanium wire leader for live mud minnow.

80 to 100 lbs fluorocarbon leades are very very costly.

Any advise would be great.

Thanks in advance.

fish for those 2 species differently IMO. trout is an artificials only game for me. 80lb mono is fine for reds but will kill whatever action u have with a tiny live bait like a mud minnow. just fish cut bait. i use much lighter leader but i am fishing for slot reds.

have caught plenty of large blues on 30lb leaders when pup fishing....secret is a circle hook, jaw hook up usually so that leader is not even in their moith during the fight. just my 2c.

Agree with Greg, I use 30lb Fluoro leader for trout and reds. When plugging off piers for Blues and Spanish I step it up to 40 lb Fluoro leader and check the leader occasionally for nicks. Have not had a cutoff yet.
