I read that article Thrifty when it came out. What I can't figure out is why the folks who run Va. Beach can't get their respective heads out of their a$....never mind. Out of the sand, and look just 65-70 miles south and see what Nags Head and the State of NC did with Jennettes Pier. I have sat on the Little Island pier fishing and talking to a lot of folks over the years and the consensus is that if Jennettes pier sat where the Sandbridge pier sits, it could be the best pier on the east coast. Well we know Va. Beach isn't going to ever extend the pier at Sandbridge, so why not add a couple of hundred feet to the 15th street pier before they build it, and make it a true fishing destination. I have no trouble driving to Jennettes to fish, so how many other would have similar feelings about the 15th street pier?
I don't agree the pier should be free, that's foolish. But again, following the example of Jennettes with prices and pin rigging premiums won't hurt that pier at all. I get pretty agitated at Jennettes because they allow so many non fishing tourists on the pier without charging them. I have caught so many kids and even adults helping themselves as they "look" through my tackle box. NOT COOL! I'm not at all interested in a ferris wheel on the pier, but a surfing hall of fame would be fitting. And add some distance to the pier before you make it, because you will never add it on later!
