We vacation at Indian Beach in late September and usually hit the piers. I want to try surf fishing this year. What can I target for during this time? I rarely see pomps caught on the pier but I hear they are in the surf. Any locals on here know the real story?
Thanks.

Same rules apply there to everywhere else. Find some good beach and get to it. Usually plenty of fleas down that way because there isn't as much beach replenishment. Usually a good slough along the beach.

As far as what will be biting...you could literally catch anything that time of year. Pomps, mullet, drum, spanish, blues etc etc. Should be plenty of mullet in the surf.

Went out this evening about and hour before sunset. Caught some blues and two nice spanish slinging green and gold ES Lures. Plenty of mullet in the surf. Bottom fishing can be hard because of the pinfish. Fish to be caught just have to work for them. As the water cools should get even better.

Last weekend, I was fishing down the beach from Indian Beach in EI. Started with shrimp and pinfish stripped the bait almost as soon as it hit the water. Switched to fish bites and caught 4 small red drum in about a half hour. All were between 14-17 inches and also caught some blues and sea mullet. Some of the bigger puppy drum should start showing up.

I have had good luck catching Spanish in the surf with gold Kastmasters. There should be a lot of finger mullet in the surf when you are there and they will ALL be swimming east to west like their tails are on fire. When the surf is pretty calm, I have good luck casting to the left and working the lure close to the breakers. The mullet are usually within casting distance and very often right in the breakers.

23mako,
Once while fishing on pier was glacial slow, I used the small hooks with tiny fishbite morsel and targeted the pinfish thieves. Hooked up over and over so fast that the youngsters on the pier where standing in line to pull them in. It was a good time watching them have fun. The adults were getting skunked but a handful of youngsters were reeling the little fighters in with no waiting!
