So, I never use/used a landing net at home. Never had the need to as most of the piers here are maybe two feet off the water. How mandatory are they for fishing, say, the pier at Cherry Grove? And where in god's name would I find one designed to land fish 15-20 feet down? Just thinking about catching something like a large red drum and I don't think he/she would appreciate being dropped off the pier from that height.

It's called a pier net. Some piers have a house pier net, some don't. If any "pier rats" are out there they will likely have one of their own and are usually happy to lend a hand. I don't own one myself, but I'm sure someone can recommend a good one if you're interested in getting your own.

You get one wherever pier nets are sold.
they come with rope but you my need extra depending on how high the pier is.
lower It down, get it under the fish and bring it up.
get the hook out take pic and reverse the process.
lower the fish down and jiggle him out of the net.
piece of cake.
