I just introduced myself a few days ago, and already several of yall have welcomed me to the forum. I am currently in the land of gloom otherwise known as illinois , but i am a native Nashvillian . My very beautiful and highly intelligent wife relocated to the south twenty years ago. so she is an honorary southerner, and she knows what bless your heart really mean's. We were in Charleston in early March made it out to Kiawah island for a few hours. I even went for a swim . Had a really bad day in the chicago traffic yesterday so just needed to speak with gentle low country folks to feel better. I have a 12' and 10' rod with zebco spinning reels on both will some one let me know if these will get me started or do i need something else, I usually use a two drop leader with either shrimp or finger mullet. Hope to be in the area within sixty days or so. One more thing and I will shut up , do any of you know any body that dances especially Tango holler back at me

Keep an eye for another member called Garboman...previously who previously maintained a residence in Chicago...I don't think he liked It there very much. His writing is hilarious !!

To answer your question... your Zebcos are a start but won't last long when a big fish comes along. It's just a matter of time before an experienced fisherman walks by you on the beach and says to himself "Bless that mans heart."

You're going to want to upgrade your equipment as you gain experience..Comeback read the forum and get ideas of what you should look for. What ever your question, it's been asked before... lots of good stuff to search for in the search field at the top of the page on the right. Check out the section called "The Bible."

Don't be afraid to ask a question someone will answer it.. it's up to you to decide the final outcome, because opinions will vary.
As far as the Tango.... either watch Dancing with the Stars, or take lessons.. I only dance with women....

Those Zebcos are going to be fine until they aren't. The day you find out you need more will be some real fun fishing though. :) If you don't get out that often, there are combos under $100 that will will do you just fine. I went through a couple of setups before deciding I was fishing enough to buy some nice stuff.

I had some WalMart combo type gear starting off, and it was a line stripping, loud drag sort of frenzy that ended up with me having a rod, reel, and no line and no lure that got me thinking about some better gear.

ctulhu and 2na are spot on, Once you have a handle on what type of fishing and how often you'll be able to go, That's when you'll know what you want.

And get out of enemy territory, it's not healthy up north , they know, that's why they keep trying to sneak in down south. "Bless There Hearts"

What are the weights on the 12 & 10' rods? SO long as you are sticking to the planks or wash fishing they should be OK until you kill the Zebco's. You probobly will not be winning any distance comps with those setups but MANY fish have been landed with similar setups.

Have fun, use the search button and post questions

Well, if you already have it, might as well use it until it breaks, right? There's plenty of fishermen out there that never buy anything better than Walmart grade and they catch plenty. Sure, if you start targeting big fish, you'll need better stuff, and you'll almost certainly break something when the odd stingray comes along. Just make sure your line isn't stronger than the equipment, or you'll be upgrading sooner than you think! Your two drop rig is fine and will catch most of the fish in the water you'll be able to reach. If you want to be more specific, you can try a flounder rig close in or a floating rig for Bluefish.
