Braved the horrendous bridge traffic and hit the Narrows last night. First lure in the water at 9:20 pm. The storms and lightening flashes must have kept the crowds and the fish away. I had a couple of hits on the storm lure with no fish landed. I switched up to a gotcha in chartreuse and yellow combination when the tide was dead low. The water was not moving at all. I was varying the speed of my retrieve on each cast. I should note that the bridge lights were mostly off so there was no real shadow line. On my speed retrieve I decided to twitch the rod tip every few turns. A fish I never saw smashed my plug and kept heading north. I was calm as I thumbed the spool to try to slow and turn the fish. I almost lost some skin as the fish could not be stopped. I was using 10lb PP with no backing. The fish emptied my reel and damn near tore the spool off the reel body. Somewhere in the upper bay is a fish with a gotcha in his mouth. I would say that the loop knot gave way as I was able to hand wind the line back on the spool. I got spooled at the Narrows! I enjoyed the hell out of those two minutes. I couldn't stop smiling as i made the walk to my truck, as I called it a night.
Highlights:
Not crowded
no bugs
got spooled
Lowlights
Busted reel
I'll be back!
