What a day we had!
My friend wanted to fish for tautog for the first time. So we fished at CBBT (Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, VA). When tautog started biting after the first small boat channel, we found a serious leak on his kayak. We hurried back to the shore. For about 1.6 miles to the shore, it took more than 3 hours to reach the shore.
Kayak was sinking fast after recognizing the leak. I figured that he was too heavy for sitting in the stern of my Hobie Outback (kayak) because of the rudder line holes on the stern would be submerged especially the wind was blowing at 10-12 knots.
I knew a woman can sit on the bow of a Hobie Outback. Luckily, because I was a small person, it was possible that a regular built young man could sit on the bow without a huge issue. Otherwise I had to make “Mayday” call immediately because of the 47 F cold water.
We were calm and we both had Marine Radios. Though I thought about “Mayday” call until we got close to the shore.
After lunch, we went to Rudee, VA for the calm water so we can find the cause of the leak and test the kayak if we could fix the leak. We found the primary cause of the leak – The transducer wire hole in the tank well (cargo area behind the seat) wasn’t sealed. We sealed the hole with duct seal and fished for puppy drum and speck for few hours.
Well, my friend caught his first tautog and first puppy drum on the same day.
I was glad that I took the Outback instead of Revolution (smaller kayak).
Fishing Log:
Thank you
Joe
