Been real short of fishing time lately (my twins were born early), but managed to sneak out this morning between feedings to a local pond for a couple of hours. Didn't get a single bite all morning, but I enjoyed the hell out of the peace and quiet. As I was walking out, I watched a decent sized bass come in and nail a bluegill that was fighting with another one over a spawning bed location. So, I said, "What the hell?" and went for one more cast. The second the lure hit the water it got slammed. I was fishing with a relatively light set up (Ugly Stik GX2 w/ a Penn Fierce 2000) and was convinced that I'd hooked a turtle or something. Whatever it was kept taking line, running to the bottom, and sitting there. It took me about 20 minutes to land the fish, but oh was it worth it.
Measurement from the butt of the rod to where the tail was laying is 19 inches and her head wasn't even with the butt of the rod. I'd estimate she was another 2 inches past the end of the rod.
Put my hand in the picture as another reference for size. I'm not a huge guy, but my fist fit in her mouth with room to spare when I was unhooking her.
I wish to god I'd had someone with me, so I could have had them take a decent picture. I also wish I'd had a scale on me, but I didn't. It's definitely the largest bass I've ever caught and one of the biggest I've seen locally. For reference purposes, the rod it's laying next to is a 5.5 foot long light set up I use for pan fish.
For the record, she was released alive and well, but I did consider keeping her (just so people believed me). Got my shoes wet sitting with her in the pond to make sure she was good and recovered before letting her go. Hope like hell I see her another day.
