I always hook them from the belly out thru the shell. I am sure there is a better way but i always seem to catch fish this way. I find that if i use the ones about as big as your thumb nail I catch more fish especially if i can find the soft shell ones. Hope this helps.
run your hook along the under side of the shell till you reach the back then push it up through the shell to keep them alive .to really catch them hook two on and hold on!!!!! Fish will think they are mating
I've always popped their shells off (or at least partially off), then hooked from the belly through the back. The bigger ones, I cut in half. I've never noticed a difference in results between using a live or a dead sandflea.
what i do is run the hook under the flea till i find this like long shellish thing in the middle. I dont know what its called but its noticable. Then i pop the hook under it and out of the top of the shell so that you pretty much have its front hanging down.
