I was planning on making a suicide run to emerald isle for a night from winston salem, but the boss and kids have decided they want to make a long weekend out of it which beach in NC except for OBX would you choose. Because of the cool down I will probably need a few family things to do but I also want to wet the line. All help is appreciated but please no links...

Well, without any links, my suggestion would be to look around the Morehead City area, about 15 miles from Emerald Isle, back on the mainland.
You will probably find better hotel / motel rates there, along with more amenities & activities for the wife & kids, while you are fishing.
In addition to Emerald Isle for fishing, you might want to check out the Fort Macon State Park area. I suggest using Googlemaps to do that.

Wrightsville - more to do, much easier drive for you coming from INT with the FAMILY UNIT I40 all the way.
More, and better places to eat. Yeah , I'm still a chow hound ...Hieronymus Seafood on Market street in Wilmington. Blue Water, Boca Bay and Oceanic in Wrightsville are my fav seafood places.. Private time with the boss.. Dirty Martinis , best frozen custard Kohls. Eating Clean?? Clean Eatz on Racine..Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson eats there regularly when he is in town filming movies.
Check out the mural on the wall if you go... Yes the owner is a good friend of mine.
Lots of Shopping just up Eastwood and over towards Mayfair.
Rooms are pricey at Holiday Inn Sunspree but it Nice .. Indoor pool as I recall.
I've put many miles in "Walking The Loop" to get my cardio in for the day.
Golds Gym on Racine just off Eastwood..
Tex's Tackle in the same area across the lot from Golds.
Johnny Mercers pier is walking distance from HI Sunspree.
