Thanks everyone in advance for their input.

I am headed to OC, MD in June. I have never surf fished there. What are some good spots. I hear good things about fishing Assateague, but will be staying closer to Fenwick, on the bayside. Couple questions?

1. Where to fish? Anywhere to drive on beach?
2. Is Assateague open for night fishing or does the park close at sunset?
3. What species is good fishing this time of year?
4. Any good spots for shark?
5. Any recommendations on a good tackle shop? I plan on getting most of my terminal tackle when I am there.

Thanks guys!

UPDATE: Breaking news, the newbie on the forum found most of his answers about Assateague Island by using a technology called "The Internet". LOL sorry guys. But if you all still got some info on good spots in OC other than Assateague, and a good tackle shop, please send them over.

However, I did have a question about the application for OSV use on the island in MD. I am going to get the the overnight permit, but was curious, what is the BULLPEN permit? See below link.

never fished surf in oc but....
If you are in Fenwick check out the Delaware beaches.
pretty sure you can drive on the beach there. long strip along rt 1 with access point
north of fenwick. probably need a permit.
I Dont think you can drive on the beach in OC.

Cap'n Macs on rt 54.. Went there a lot when I had a place in OC.
Knows about the fishing in the area.

If you go to Cap't macs stop in at Smitty Mc'gees on 54.
Great wings and other stuff.

Awesome thank you. Been coming to OC for over 25 years, just never fished. Just recently getting into it. Smitty Mc'gees is a great spot. Havent been in ages, maybe I'll get back there.

One more question about driving on Assateague Island. Is it crazy busy this time of the year? I can't seem to find anything on it, some say its not even worth it on a weekend, others say they havent had any issues.

I was there last weekend and it was pretty empty due to cold weather and light rain. I saw a sign about the OSV being closed due to something. So you might want to check into that before buying a permit.
Thanks for that. I spoke with someone at the Ranger Station who didn't say anything about it being closed during the time I was going to be there, but I will double check.

the OSV was closed due to overwash from the wind/tide but it's usually open. In June it can be a 1 off 1 on because of the amount of bathers avoiding the OC beaches, get there before sunrise and you'll have no problem. BullPen is used for trucks with camper tops and the regs for them is in the brochure. The sand can be very deep and powdery in the summer for the first mile so be prepared. The Rangers are pretty cool and WILL check on you and sometimes your coolers throughout the night. All Tackle on Rt. 50 is probably the best shop around there with the widest range of supplies and bait.

Buy jigs (+/- .5 oz) before you head over...if you can get them cheaper than the standard Walmart pricing....also hooks. Walmart is about 10 minutes out from OC so if your local Walmart sales saltwater fishing supplies...that's pretty much what you can get at their Walmart. If you are inland and your Walmart specializes in freshwater gear...you can get most of your stuff when you arrive. Support local where you can :) I'd recommend rods that you can use off the bridge (shorter than 7 foot) and also surf rods if you're going to head to Assateague. Both, bank sinkers and pyramid sinkers. From the bridge you'll be fishing for flounder, stripers and blues...with an occasional trout, spot, etc. added in. I'd say buy a spreader (for flounder), have some leaders handy (in case the blues are biting) and some metal lures for snapper blues. In the surf, who knows? Stripers, sharks, blues, triggers, etc. Bring a small shovel so you can dig your own sandfleas. You'll also have to get some fresh cutbait. All other bait you can buy at a local baitshop (about 1/2 mile from the bridge - bloodworms, squid, shirimp, etc.). Assateague is only about 20 mins or so from OC bridge.
