I got out to the Garden City Pier today in the afternoon. There were scattered catches of Spanish, Blues and a few small whiting. A few guys limited out, but most did not. Around 6 PM at the start of the rising tide I moved to the end and started casting my mackerel tree rig in the zone where the pier created a shadow on the water and started casting at the edge .....BINGO! I started tearing up the Spanish, sometimes taking 2 or 3 fish per cast. It kept going for an hour until the Sun went behind some clouds and light rain set in. The best I got in was just over 17", though I did have some big hits.... I had a couple of rigs bitten off as well. The key seemed to be casting out and immediately starting to jig, keeping my rig close to the surface.
Away from the end of the pier where guys were fishing with shrimp or cut bluefish they were taking a mix of blues and whiting....but no bull whiting, even in the surf zone.
On a side note, when I got home I tossed a couple of those Spanish on the grill.......Mmmm, mmmm, mmmm! I'll be back there in a couple of days after I get some more mackerel trees tied up.
