charlie, you will find as you grow more comfortable with the backcast that it is nothing more than a reverse pendulum. as such [imho] you can keep the guides on same side of the rod as you would any conventional setup. having said that i respectfully defer to p. thain who is much more of an authority on the subject.
My rods are rung on the side that creates less problems for the caster.
After a few years and plenty of phone calls, I decided to make my life easier - I ring mine on the softer side (Multipliers) this way I'm not fighting the rod and there is less chance of the rod trying to snake during the cast.
