A good friend of mine went fishing in OC this past weekend. He was the guy who has been fishing OC for 20 years, and taught me how to tog fish. He only got two throwbacks. Regulars told him it had been good there, but the cold snap we have had, pushed the togs out. He used frozen sandcrabs. No bait store was selling fresh ones.

I am going next weekend. What do you guys recommend for bait??

BTW: If at the bulkhead or inlet, you see an old white guy with a beautiful Chinese lady and two Chinese girls, that's me. Please stop by and say hi.

You mean sandfleas? Anyway, if you cannot get green crabs or fresh sandfleas, I know of few expert toggers did well on shrimp (with the heads on bought from Asian markets).

Shrimp does well certain times of the season when their teeth are molting. They prefer something softer. They do work anytime, but not as productive as sandfleas and crabs. I was able to catch them with other types of crabs when green crabs weren't available.

Did you try Sunset Marina for live sandfleas? they usually have tons of them outside their shop on the deck in tanks

mdsurffishing: Good suggestion about Sunset Marina. I'll give that a shot, if I can't get many racking.


I've got a sandflea rack. I'm thinking of trying Assateague on Friday. My girls would like to see the horses again, and have a beech bonfire. Then I'll try racking the surf.

I like mine with garlic and a little bit of olive oil over pasta. And and course a good glass of Chardonnay :beer:.

I would say a they taste like a cross between soft shell crabs and shrimp but for like shrimp, not bad at all. If I were fishing now I would dig sand fleas on the beach or use white leggers for bait.
