What pound monofilament would you recommend for pier fishing with a 9 foot surf rod.

I use 14# sakuma with a 30# bite leader on my 9' tica, casts great imo.
Fot throwing gotchas.
It has nothing to do with the length of the rod and everything to do with the rod's line rating ... at least to a very fair degree. The rod itself will also have a payload weight range for casting. Observe and take into account these two labeled rod parameters - line weight & payload weight - and employ both for the fish you wish to target. This may mean either an underrated or overrated rod selection.

Also, consider the need and use for a casting shock leader - it can be married to the main line with a variety of knots, depending on the line types used and the fish types targeted.

In addition it also depends on your reel type and size.

I would think twice about using braid on a pier unless there are not many folks around.

I never did a lot of pier fishing, we might do that about once a year when on vacation, so generally used 15 to 20 lb test mono, regardless of rods used. That's heavy enough to handle many fish species plus wear on the line.

If you fish piers a lot, you may want to get more specific with what you use, based on where you're fishing and what fish species you're targeting.

When we fished piers on the NC or SC coast, it was for whatever might be biting at the time, and seldom was that large fish. I generally used Berkley Big Game line, and now mono line that I use is Ande brand.

And yes, as has been mentioned, be sure that the line you choose will fit on the reels you're using. Reel information provides recommendations for what lines to use and how much capacity the reel with have with the line you're using.

I prefer mono for revolvers and braid for spinners. I can use a long topshot of mono mated to braid for revolvers if a capacity boost is needed. I'm only going off the surf, no piers, but if I went on a pier it'd be with a revolver and mono. YMMV.

I do a lot of pier fishing. I tried braid, but wasn't impressed with it. I typically use 12# mono for most pier applications. It just depends on your set-up and what your targeting. Most people tell me that 12# is too light, but break-offs are rare. I prefer a lighter set-up.
12-15lb main line should be fine for most species
