So far this summer I have fished both sides of the bay 2 times and 2 salt water rivers and all I have gotten is 2 keepers and 1 jellyfish sting.

My freezer is empty so I am headed for First Landing State Park next to try something new. Ive never fished there before but I love to surf fish.

Anybody had any luck there ever? I d be happy with a keeper size croaker at this point.

Almost always catch something at First Landing. Suggest early morning or late afternoon as water temps are way up. Are you using FISHBITES? A friend of mine, who is a newbee fisher woman, went Wednesday to the oceanfront with Bloodworm Fishbites and slayed the spots and roundheads. Should work just peachy-keen at F.L...Best and cheapest Fishbites are at Princess Anne Distributers tackle shop at 21st St and Cyprus Ave in Va.Beach...Ask the guys if you have questions.I have fished with all of them at sometime in the last 45 years and they are straight-shooters.

nooo. not a newbie but thank you for the info. I use squid, mud minnows or minnows caught with a cast net. Yes. I throw a cast net. I'm pretty good too. Just not catching any fish this year that is a decent size. Last week I fished early and late at Kiptopeake and all I got was some small croaker and large pig fish. Im looking to put something in the freezer. Large croaker would be fine.

I'm over at Ft. Story which is very close to First Landing. I'm going to second the recommendation of Fishbites. I don't know what it is out here, but the fish love those damn things. I buy the bloodworm scent for spot, pampano, and croaker. I haven't caught one here myself yet, but my friend tells me the drum love the shrimp flavored fishbites. I've had zero luck on the squid flavor this year.

I was using bloodworm, shrimp, and flesh-colored squid Fish Bites at Lynnhaven Pier last night along with cut finger mullet and cut frozen squid. Also bounced a chartreuse grub flounder rig along the bottom. Nothing worked except for the bloodworm Fish Bites which must be a fish's version of crack here. Yeah right now they really like that stuff.

What were you getting on the bwfb? Spot? Croaker? Both?

The spot and white perch I've caught this week were all on squid with bloodworm fish bites, but croaker were content with shrimp. Using bloodwoorms has the same effect though, and the price difference isn't that big. The advantage of fish bites is that they can sit in the fridge for months.

Hell I don't even keep mine in the fridge, just reseal the bag and call it a day. I probably should keep them in the fridge, but I go through 'em pretty quick and it hasn't slowed me down yet.
