Two weeks prior, we caught Whiting all day. I caught two small flounder.
This past Sunday, one Whiting.
A few other comments. One bite on mud minnows - and it was interesting. It was like I had one large tug. I was walking down the beach casting forward at an angle and dragging/bumping it back to me such that in the end it was coming in from behind me at an angle. I was working my way to a point in the beach where the wave action was different. Suddenly, it there was no give. It didn't feel like a hit, and it didn't shake. I didn't try to set the hook specifically, just turned and pulled up. On the 3rd pull, it was gone. I wanted to believe it was a big flounder, but who knows. A skate? A rubber boot?
Later, caught a 12" blacktip on the mudminnow.
But here was the heart-pounding moment of the day: I didn't let go of the rod for hours, until finally I sat down to eat some lunch. I had just a 3-drop bottom rig with shrimp and fleas on the rod in a sand spike. I looked up and there was my rod going crazy ready to pull the sand spike down! I jump up, lunch flying, shouting "My rod!" and as I run for it, me and my whole family see a big fish leap out of the crest of the breaker!!!!!!! It was certainly longer than two feet, possibly 30" long, and cleared the water. I grabbed the rod, felt the pull, and then it was gone. Line cut. I turn, shaking, and staring in shock back towards my family who I figured thought I'd gone crazy. Instead they were like "Did you see that fish?!!?" It was so cool that we all saw it.
I'm assuming it was a big bluefish (it was shaped like one, but you tell me) and it had probably nailed a small fish that had grabbed my shrimp. But if it was, then why nothing else all day? Why no birds that close to shore? There were a number of pelicans, gulls, and terns diving, mostly well beyond reach. I saw a few fish jump further out, but nothing that resembled a blitz or real feeding action. Is it normal to see a big bluefish in the summer? I've got a nice one at the point once years ago.
