We have these fish in Marshy Hope Creek. Would like to catch take a picture then release it. A few yellow perch this morning, but not good fishing. Was no water in marina. Very low tide. It was down about four feet. Grass Tree Plant Label

Occasionally sightings are reported in the Susquehanna but they are very rare. I think Maryland DNR has been having some success with them in one of the hatcheries.

Today I got a report of some bigger YP in one of the rivers. Hope to be able to check it out one day next week. I went out this morning and my minnow tub was iced over so I moved it into the garage. It was so cold all the minnows were hunkered down on the bottom in clusters. Last year it froze into a solid block of ice and I lost all my minnows. Hopefully I will be able to keep them for a lot longer this year.

I was pretty sure it is not even legal to fish for them. By catch is one thing but to specifically pursue is another. The DNR website isn't much help:

"The taking of American shad, hickory shad, blueback herring, alewife herring, Atlantic sturgeon, and shortnose sturgeon is prohibited"

A liberal translation or at least a liberal association is if shad may be fished for and caught but not kept then one could extend that argument to the sturgeon as well. Not sure I would want to try to argue that to a DNR officer thought.

Cool it guys. I am not going to fish for them. Might rig up with 10# Mono. line and 20# Floro leader and fish for catch and release pickerel. See if I can catch a large one and take a picture. Better then staying in the house all day.

Yes as a by catch they are awesome. Kinda like hooking a VW Bug and hoping it runs out of gas.
Hooked maybe 6 in the last 25 years and only landed one. You are not allowed to lift out of water for a pic BTW.
OH and those cute little diamonds on the top of them called scutes can cut you good..

Thanks Capt. Didn't know not to take out of water for picture. I am not going to even think about it. Like they are not even in our waters. Go fishing guys. I am in a little while.
