Hello all,

I'm a college student at NC State University studying industrial design. For a project, I'm redesigning a tackle box. One of the ideas I'm exploring is to have a smaller pouch or box that you could clip onto your belt, which would carry a couple lures and hooks, in case you were going out and didn't want to take your whole tackle box with you. From your experiences, would you find this useful, or are there other aspects of tackle boxes that need redesigning? Thanks!

Honestly, I'd need more space than a belt pouch. You need room for lures, rigs, a pair of pliers, etc. I actually carry a backpack when I fish. Plenty of room for my tackle boxes (the compartment style boxes that you see) and other odds and ends like extra line and a water bottle. When I'm surf fishing, I use a 3 gallon bucket. Holds everything I need plus it has the added benefit of not being a problem if a stray wave comes higher than I thought it would.

Sounds like and awesome project though. Best of luck to you!

The idea sounds good. For surf fishermen that stand on the point or similar, a waterproof pouch big enough to carry a couple extra rigs, snaps, shock leader etc. I'd want a pouch that compartmentalize each so that I have room for error if hit with a wave, too many chillies, or just have numb fish hands.

Some possible considerations:

Make it rustproof and mildew resistant
Be sure that it will allow contents to dry without being removed
Transparent to allow contents to be easily visible
Latches/closures that can be worked easily with gloves on

Make it soft side out of sail cloth. Mildew resistant and hook proof.

I always thought i needed a way to bring more stuff with me like a fishing cart i'm taking engineering and drawing design in my high school and i could draw one up on Autocad or inventor but our 3D printers are plastic only and not big enough

Not sure how many fishermen are wearing belts when surf fishing.

As for tackle boxes go it would nice to have longer and wider compartment for your spoons.

And maybe add some small holes for air can cirrculate to dry things out.

And use a plastic that doesn't react to soft baits.

Good luck with your project.

I do a lot of wader/walking fishing and I usually wear what is typically referred to as a fly-fishing vest over my waders and dry top to carry all of my stuff. There are typically 8-10 pockets on the vest that are semi-waterproof which is where I store everything that I think I'll need for where/what I'm fishing for. Hard lures, lead-heads and packages of grub tails, sinkers and leadered hooks or rigs, leader material, snaps and swivels, pliers etc. A normal vest weighs 5 - 10 lbs. so the small belt pouch wouldn't do it for me.

I do have a hard plastic belt pouch similar in size but it's used for chunks of bait when I wonder too far from the truck or tackle bag, it too goes on my wader belt.

One Idea, it to look at fly fishing packs. I like fly fishing packs, as I am a fly fisherman, because they can carry everything I need without the trouble of a big vest. Things to consider are:

-Waterproof/rustproof
-Slots for pliers
-Velcro patch on the side of the pack and a small piece of velcro on the rod, so when rebating/tying nots the rod can be attached to the pack and out of the sand
-A removable towel to wipe of hands and clean
-Filet knife holster
-etc.

Good packs to look at are william-joseph fly packs. They have a lot of good qualities, but all of them seem to be missing one thing.

Hey guys!! I'm back. Sorry for the wait, but here we are. See the attached below. If you have time:

Please read this and vote on which one you think would be the best (pick #1 or #2).

Keep in mind that this would be for a trip where you only wanted to take a couple lures with you, and that you might have more than one of these "lure boxes" on your belt/waistband. Thanks guys!

I dont want to burst your bubble, but you may want to take a look at the surf belts used along the North East Coast. The are numerous holders, pouches, and bags along with other acceesories and holders. My comments on your design pertain to the belt clip that would attach on your belt and the materials. It appears to be open, meaning you just slide it on to your belt. To me, this may result in accidentily knocking it off the belt and potentially loosing the contents. I would want a closed loop that would prevent an accidental knock off. I would also want it to fit a 2" belt. My preference of material would be canvas or sailcloth and the closure would be velcro. I do use a 2" belt when surf fishing with a holder for fishing pliars that are on a spring cord and 2 pouches, one for leaders and hooks and one for bait. I the same belt on a boat, removing the two pouches, but leaving the pliars. Good luck in your endeavors.
