Tom,

I was there the weekend of the 23rd for trout fishing. We did fish the lake from the shore - lots of bass fisherman braving the heavy winds with limited success. Check the MD DNR site - they always post about Deep Creek... Me -I'll be off to Ontario in a month for a week of smallmouths, largemouths and pike fishing (sunrise to sunset)....

Smallmouth should be active and shallow. May is a great month for them in Deep Creek. My favorite 3 lures for them are 4" texas rigged tubes (green pumpkin color), 4-5.5" stick baits rigged weedless or wacky, and soft plastic swim baits. Rattle traps or other lipless cranks are good too. I prefer soft plastic in general. If I was only going to take 1 lure it would be a tube.

Largemouth should start moving up towards spawning areas but won't be shallow yet. Points and dropoffs near spawning areas would be the best place to try for largemouth.

Live minnows under a bobber is a great choice for live bait.
