Most likely will be heading to YellowStone, Grand Teton and Glacier National Parks in mid September.

What would be a decent rod for throwing spinners for trout out there?

What are your favorite spinners for trout?

Thanks for your help.

Browning travel rods sold at Bass Pro are pretty good- so are the St. Croix travel rods- I have used several different manufactures- all are pretty decent- for the type fishing you are describing in your post, I would go with a light action fast tip rod with line capability of 6-10# test (mono) and a reel of the 1000 series or 2000 at the max...French spinners and Blue Fox work well for me...1/16 or 1/8 oz...I would recommend Floro for fishing these ultra clear waters-

Any spinner in size #0 or #1, red or fluro green works well. Cast mostly across stream and let the current do the work of turning the blade. As the current moves the spinner across and downstream
keep close to the bottom. Most of your strikes will come when the spinner movement changes, swing gets faster or spinner starts to rise. I order kits from several places and make my own spinners.
Mostly use the French blades. If fished right and slow the trout will hit hard and often.

Orest,

Don't overlook the use of small spoons for trout. I use them almost exclusively for trout in Western MD rivers - Youk, North Branch, Casselman, etc. I outfish my spinner-only friends at least 5-1. 1/4 oz or less would work for ultralight applications with a 50/100 sized reel and light mono/fluroro line. My favs are gold/red, silver/blue, and silver/orange although rainbow trout colors has taken some nice trout as well. Last year I hammered the trout in the North Branch at Barnum including five trout that were in the 20-25" range.

Spoons rock!

For trout they like the mini vibrax gold spinner, small flies, and panther spinning lures. For catching trout on streams I'd bring a ugly stick combo rod or if you know how bring a crystal river fly fishing rod. The fly fishing rod can break down into 3 or 4 pieces so perfect for traveling.

Take some small crankbaits, like rapala minnows and rebel crayfish, they often work much better than spinners, almost always work better than spinners. Make sure to take some 1/4 oz castmasters for yellowstone lake.

I have not fished out west but I have been a trout fisherman for over 40 years. I never trout fish without a pack or two of Gulp Minnows. I mostly use the 2½ & 3" watermelon pearl on the lightest jig that will get me to the depth I need. I like to cast across stream and tight line the jig just enough to keep it off the bottom. They are so deadly on the native trout around here I almost feel like I'm cheating. Best of luck!

Just found out yesterday that the Berry fire has forced the evacuation and closure of the first lodge we were going to stay at near the south entrance of Yellowstone and the south entrance to the park is closed.

The second lodge we were scheduled to stay at near the Grand Teton's has a lot of smoke.

Trip might be cancelled.
