After years of not being able to go my friends/relatives on their group trips to Davis Island it looks like I'll be able to get away from work to accompany them late April this year. This will be my first trip but I think all but one other person going has been several times.

I know they've caught a mixed bag whenever they go, how's the surf fishing there in late April? Last couple years I've done some shark fishing in surf in summer thru labor day, finally beached my first decent one this past summer at Ft. Fisher. Would sharks be worthwhile from Davis Island in late April? I should be able to take my kayak.
Thx!

Yes, sharks could definitely be around in numbers. I have caught many while drum fishing that time of year from the beach.

Keep your fingers crossed that some warm water blows in. I've taken my son beach camping at CALO the past three years in early May for two nights and it was completely different each time. 2013 - small flounder, black drum, many 18" sharks (not dogfish) and large red drum at the point at sunset. 2014 - cold water blew in and all we could manage was a couple of dogfish but the shelling was by far the best we've ever seen. 2015 - keeper flounder, bluefish, many over-slot drum, saw a 38" cobia caught and 4-5' sharks. This year we'll be following you going April 27-30. Bringing the kayaks for the first time also. Best of luck to you and let us know how you do!

I'll be down the 22-24 shark fishing. I have caught some of my biggest sharks in april. Last year we had a double hook-up both sharks landed within 2 minuets of each other both over 100lbs. I'll be out there with the shark platform on top of my truck stop by If you see us on the beach.

I think I may have passed your set-up, fairly close to the lighthouse? We were following the other guys in our party that apparently knew some spots. So I didn't stop. Did you have any success?

We caught fish off and on, nothing better than 21APR our first day there. Undersize trout, 14" blues, whiting, small flounder, 3 foot sharks & one small hammerhead & skates. Also I caught a nice sheepshead in the surf, my first one in the surf. One of our party caught two drum in the slot. I almost always had a shark rig casted out with a whiting/bluefish head, I had four runs or so & had a four footer in the suds before in inexplicably came unhooked. Had one more I never really turned, I had him almost stopped after 15 minutes before the cable leader pulled thru the crimp sleeve. From now on I'm using single-strand wire, haywire twists & double crimps.

I'm here at Davis right now. Bunch of small stuff during the day but last night I landed a 5-1/2' Spinner Shark and helped my 17 year old bring in his first big Drum.... 47"! Lots of snapped lines and lost rigs but it was a blast.
