So, went to Dam Neck (south end adjacent to sandbridge) with my daughter. Fishing for me, tanning for her. Walking to the surf, saw several ospreys, pelicans and gulls catching fish right in front of me. Very few waves, pretty calm water, so I was thinking it looked promising.
Put a drop rigs in with squid FB and some shrimp, and sat an waited about 5 mins. Then I looked to my left (north) and some the water churning with fish jumping and even more birds about 150 yards away. Decided to pull in the short pole to toss a spoon. As I am reeling in, about 30 yards left, rod bends over and starts screaming and running out. Only have 15 lb test on this pole, and usually keep the drag low to avoid snapping off and its just more fun that way. This goes on and off for about 3 mins, line runs out, slows down and I reel in, and repeat the cycle. Finally tightened the drag a bit and the line snaps. Not sure what it was, but I was moving on to the spoon. Probably a skate, maybe a shark.
Moved down the beach, started tossing the spoon, few hits but nothing strong enough to stay on. Around the 8-10th cast, spool develops a snag and snapped the spoon off and I watched it sail out to sea. Schooling was slowing down, so moved back to my spikes, re-rigged a double drop and as I am casting out, the rig blows up in the air! The wire clamp just broke loose, no wonder it was on clearance. Another lose of tackle.
So, for those of you scoring at home-2 lost wire rigs, 6 oz of bait, and a spoon. In less than an hour. After all that I called it quits, was getting expensive. Good news? There is some action at Dam Neck right now.
