Dude was pulling your leg, or just plain full of it. Croakers are an East Coast fish. They range from Massachusetts to the Gulf Coast.

During the winter, they go to deeper water where they enter a state of suspended animation. They come back up into the bays and creeks when the water warms.

Croakers we catch in the Ches Bay are but ONE of many fish in the drum family many which do make the croaking noise.

There ARE European members of the Drum family that also croak and they make our 14-19 inch fish pale in comparison to size.

West coast has it's croakers too. At least 5 varieties that I know of that are caught in the surf. Didn't do a lot of pier or surf fishing when I lived there, but did catch a few. Now I couldn't say for sure, but I would tend to be skeptical as well about these fish migrating to Israel.... ;)
