Conquest Road Beach (South of Dewey) 5/24 Wed

First time surf fishing this coastal area. First, visited Old Inlet B&T for bait; the fellow said I may catch blues or stripers, and redfish are not quite in yet. The day was partly cloudy, and a bit of a breeze, but not enough to shorten my casts. At 11 am, started soaking shrimp and cutbait on two surf rods for 5 hrs. Hard to tell if a fish was on; crashing waves pulled/yanked my rod tips. Current pulled my rigs southward, even with as much as 8 oz. Anyway, caught 10 skates. Was tempted to take some home because some grocers sell them, but nahhh...next time. An angler on my right caught a blue, maybe a foot long. Didn't see the angler on my left catch anything.

Good to get out though. I think you need to get longer surf tubes if your line is slapping the water. I make mine from 7' metal fence poles and strap a piece of PVC on the end with a stainless steel straps. The tall height - as well as a longer rod - will keep your line off the water.

I think Conquest road is one of those areas that are gated/padlocks and do not open until 8 am. Way too late for me! Other areas off route 1 have 24/7 access...

Whoaa....that's some height. My sand spikes are only about 3 ft long each, and they do fine at Virginia Beach. I just may try longer spikes, or don't fish on big surf wave days....lol.

Where are those accesses, and are they state park accesses?

I'm also looking to try North Shores and farther south to Fenwick or Assateague soon.
