Went out there today and the only action was some small blues and croaker. Fished from 3pm till about 6:30. Is illegal to hookup with those sandbar sharks. I know it is illegal to fish for shark in VB now but who's to say I was trying.

I'm new to fishing in va beach. Just moved here.
Can you point me in the right direction to where I might be able to find the va beach regulations for shark fishing from the beach.
I read a newspaper article that said chumming within 500 yards of the beach has been illegal since the 70's, but I can't find any official reg's.

I'll have to see about those regs. It might only be illegal on the ocean side. I caught small ones and they make the reel sing. Oooooo, I like it.

i was just reading the reg and it doesnt say you cant catch any shark it really doesnt say you cant fish for them as far as i can tell its a commercial problem? maybe i read this wrong. please correct me. also i have fished for stripper with spot head and done well could i be ticketed if they think its a shark set up??

The Code of the City of Virginia Beach pertaining to shark fishing is below. Please pay special attention to the second paragraph of (1) (2). Ya pays yer nickel, ya takes yer chances. Ya bait up or chum for cobia within 500 yards of the City of Virginia Beach, ya just might be in violation of the law.

Sec. 6-31. Shark fishing prohibited.

(a) No person shall:

(1) Place in the marginal adjacent ocean or bay within five hundred (500) yards of the mean low water line any chum, blood or free floating bait for the purpose of attracting sharks, or

(2) Fish for sharks within the city limits and the marginal adjacent waters within five hundred (500) yards of the mean low water line.

These prohibitions shall include fishing or chumming from any beach, structure, jetty or boat, utilizing tackle, bait or chum intended for or commonly used to catch or attract sharks.

(b) Any person who shall violate any provision of this section shall be guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor.

so no chumming but i can still through a head out there. right ?? that would be good enough for me. i dont really target them but i dont dodge them either. i usually through a hunk out there on my heavy and use lighter tackle and lures while i wait.

Catchinabuzz, that's what I do too. I guess if you catch one, try to quiet about it and return it to its home. Man I hate to get that ticket.
