I am planning a camping trip to AI and i have a few questions. Ive read some other posts and found some answers but i want to be prepared so to not waste a trip.

We plan on fishing 24/7 so i will be allowed to set up camp right on the surf right?

I built a bait launcher out of pvc and compressed air. 20-40 lbs will launch forever depending on weight, wind, line, etc. i dont see where thats illegal right?

Will ghost crabs crawling through the tent be an issue? if so how do i keep them away other than the obvious tight zipper answer?

I read where you have to buy firewood there....really?

Can i take a generator? (my wife is going too)

thanks for any answers

I do not think the camping is right on the beach, seem to think the closest sites are behind the dunes. But I'm not certain about that...........

I saw two guys using launchers this past weekend so I presume they are legal........

I know there are several firewood business's very close to AI, not sure what the regs are.

There are two campgrounds, the Federal one and the State one, close together. I'd call whichever one you are staying at and ask them your questions...

When are you going? If it's in season, fishing near the campgrounds is going to be difficult at best. If you have 4WD and are willing to buy the permit, there is 12 miles of beach you can drive on, which is a better choice for fishing...

the rangers will check on you, they are all pretty cool but just like any law enforcement if you act like a jackass they will trump you. the ones that get away with bending the rules might be local or know the rangers but if you have any doubts about what you should or shouldn't do it's best to call them directly and ask. I've seen them escort people out and slap hefty fines on people "not knowing the rules". you will have a better chance at getting a strait answer that here.

They want you to buy firewood locally, because out-of-state firewood may have the emerald ash borer, an insect that has been decimating ash trees.

Buy firewood on the way just outside the park.

I used a gen to blow up an air mattress. I dont think they want you to keep one running.

I went 3 weeks ago and bugs weren't an issue. Kept a small fire going. Went through about 30 lg pcs of wood.

Bugs depend on wind, both speed and direction.
The green head flys can be bad, as well as the mosquitos.
You don't camp on the beach...camp in designated spots only. The map of the parks can be found on line.
The State park has hot and cold water, showers, bath houses, flat sites.
The National park is a bit more rustic...cold showers, camp sites may be level r not, but is closest to the ORV area.
I wouldn't camp there, and I have since the mid 60s, without a screened room, or two. One to set up at camp, and one to pitch on the beach when you are down the beach.
Bring two ropes, and extra long tent stakes for every pole on any set up. I have seen more tents and screened rooms blown down than you can count.
Keep your food secured, and put away. The horses there will break in campers and tents to get some food. I have seen them take a loaf of bread from a camper's hand. They are bold, and dangerous if you don't keep away from them.

Have fun and enjoy the place.

Don't forget it's their land and you're just a guest. Have fun.

I have seen the horses get tangled up in a tent's hold down ropes, and destroy the tent trying to get out. The horses either don't see the ropes, or don't care, and just try to push through them. The tent is the weak link, and usually gets torn up.
Dangerous for both horse and tent.
Oh yea, it is a $125 fine last I checked if a ranger sees you too close to the horses, feeding them etc.
