When do Spanish mackerel start to show up? How deep is buckroe pier? Can u catch big fish there
Never seen a Spanish caught there. Maybe 20 ft deep at the end?
Basically there's two things people do to catch big fish at buckroe. Red drum are caught by throwing cut bait really close to shore. Cobia are caught at the end by throwing live or cut bait as far as you can. I don't fish buckroe anymore as that pier has a very dedicated group of locals who are there everyday fishing shoulder to shoulder. They know exactly what they're doing. I prefer a less congested pier or the beach but to each their own.

This made me chuckle, because everytime I've ever fished buckroe it has been a shit show. There is a dedicated group of locals that know how to fish with one another. That group is also transient and will be at whatever pier the fish are at for the most part. The majority of the people fishing buckroe have little idea of what their doing. No effort to keep lines from getting crossed. Dead sticking a rod high on the rail with the but under someone's heaver and so forth. Clouds of pot smoke. It is a good cobia pier when the season starts but there's better spots in July and September.

Depending on water temp - Spanish usually show up early June on the ocean front beaches like Sandbridge and Back Bay - Dam Neck can be a good spot for them if you have access - as far as piers go - probably Virginia Beach fishing pier at the oceanfront is best - can use gotchas from the piers - but usually find a spoon like a Kastmaster usually best from the beach - either silver or gold - cast very well - sometimes a little smaller profile is better as they are usually feeding on glass minnows - good time is low light - around sunrise or sunset on an incoming or high tide - recommend no extra hardware/barrel swivels - use your favorite knot to attach braid to mono or fluorocarbon leader - lighter leader will get more bites - but will have more cut offs - I usually use 20lb test for more bites - can bump up to 30lb if necessary - the fish from the beach usually are keeper size but not huge - mid to upper teens - and are fun to catch - will also catch your share of blues to go with them
