Made a saltwater run this week . Had a decent trip but it could have been much better. I had 13 break offs on braid. These were not hook set breaks but breaks that occurred after the fish is hooked and on the way to me. Any touch of an obstruction or a sudden surge and its gone. Used power pro until the disgust got too great so I respooled with ez braid. Terrible mistake. I tried with a fluorocarbon leader direct to the braid. Mono direct. Mono with a swivel. Always ended with a break on the braid. I had never used braid and was not a fan until I got a Mojo surf that is a braid only rod. I like everything about it....sensitivity....balance...power....there are no negatives to the combo......BUT THE BUSTED BRAID!!!!

Any and all suggestions much appreciated!!

Have always used fireline since it first hit the market and never looked back.. Having said that, know PLENTY of folks that use pp and have great success with the stuff.. Did hear of some bad batches with mystery breakoffs, but that was years ago.. Could be knots or maybe a bottom with debris that is cutting or fraying the line.. If you have never used braid before,it is possible to tie the wrong knot and it will actually weaken it and make it more susceptible to breakage..

You either got a bad batch or use the wrong knot maybe too light test. I've used fireline, regardless ppm, suffix 832 and pp super slick 8. Ppm ss 8 and 832 I what I use now 15 and 20#. The only time it breaks is when I hang up on the bottom but I've also straighten out a few 3/0 hooks breaking the snags.

I too think you must have a bad batch. I have been using PP 30 on my surf spinners for at least 10 years with no issues. A friend of mine purchased a bulk spool off of e bay a couple of years back and he had nothing but issues until he finally dumped that spool for a USA purchased spool.

Guides are smaller and will not allow mono the clearance for the loop. I thought it can't make that much difference. I put mono on and it cut casting distance by 75% to 80%. 3/4 ounce weight was a heave to get 20 yards on a cast.

Yeah u must have a bad spool or a nick in a guide. To check for a nick use a q tip and run it around the guides. I use the Palomar to a snap swivel then use a flurocarbon leader or bottom rig. I also melt the tag end incase the knot does slip a bit.

I was using 30 lb in both. Using the Berkley braid knot tied very very carefully. Also tried the double improved clinch and palomar.....results were sadly consistent with all.

Palomar is the only knot,of the ones you mentioned, that I would even think about tying in braid.. Try fg,uni, bimini to no-name for mono connection,if you are using a mono leader.. It could also be the guides as some have mentioned above.. If you see frays in your line,it is either the guides or the bottom you are fishing... jmho...
