What's the word with the black flies up on the 4x4 carova? Have they finally left or them sumbitches still heavy out there?

The only thing I have found that works on those pesky black flies is Essential oils Terrashield. Surprisingly, my wife turned me on to this stuff. They will fly around but not land on areas where it has been applied.

Black flies, aka mullet flies, this time of year usually show up on off shore winds. Best protection is long sleeve shirt and long pants. Cutter on exposed areas. Fish at night - they
go away at dark. Bad little buggers. best - glenn

Mo's OBX Skeeter Beater works and Hawaiian Tropic Dry Oil aerosol spray works as well, but you will need to reapply it often. Long pants are best if you can wear them.

Permetherin is to be only applied to clothing and then allowed to dry. DO NOT apply directly to you skin like Off, Skin So Soft, Repel, etc.

Does the Thermacell have any affect on Blackflies or is it too breezy?

A Thermacell may work if you are stationary for longer periods of time like sitting in a beach chair as long as there is not a lot of wind, but if you are up and walking about a lot, it will not help much

Friend in Orental said the skeeters and flies have been epic after Hermionie. They have one of the "old fashioned" bug zappers and it literally catches fire about every 30 mins to an hour all night as the dead bugs build up, catch fire and fall to the ground.
Also on Permetherin go to Wally World they sell Sawyer bug treatment that is Permetherin for about 8-9 dollars

Mosquitos stick around even at night. As has been suggested, coat EVERYTHING, all clothing, with Permethrin (not skin).

As for what to put on self, I've found Ultrathon 12 to be the absolute best!!

As far as Permethrin goes, I make my own. I get a 10oz bottle or 10% concentrate from Tractor Supply or Southern States for $10 and add 1oz to 1gal of water and you have an approximate .5-.6% solution, that is the same as you buy in the 6oz bottle at Wally World for $8-$12. I can make approximately 10 gallons for the same cost of a 6oz-8oz can from Wally World.
