Puffer just wanted to give you some Idea as to the beaches around that area you suggested you were interested in . Your only 2 Hrs and 53 min from the east coast where I am . I know someone in that area on the gulf will jump in here with the real life experiance and give you the skinny on some hot spots.

puffer, the gulf beaches around st pete are loaded with spanish mackeral right now. closer to where you are would be honeymoon island or caladesi island. ft de soto is another good option. surf, pier or flats in desoto. you can rent kayaks there, and near honeymoon island also. no pier on honeymoon, but not too much farther from there is pier 60 in clearwater beach. for more species, check out either the north or south skyway pier. i think there are still some tarpon around and i know that some keeper grouper and king mackeral are begining to come over the railing. i haven't fished north of dunedin, but from there south to the skyway there are lots of good fish to be caught. let us know how you do.

Thanks a bunch sandcasting and Kozlow

Thanks a bunch sandcasting and Kozlow,

Such good help. We ended up at Sanibel Island and Captiva. Had a great time caught many pompano. Crazy beach runs with bait fish beaching themselfs...birds thrashing the water and dolphins leaping for pompano?. Hooked up cast after cast! So great. So glad I rememberd to bring my bass rod. Next time I'll leave my 13 foot Outerbanks rod at home hehe.

Anyway thanks again can't wait to come back to Florida to fish. Looks like my vacation is over.....driving back to the catfish hatchery in NC tommorow.
