Seaview Crab Company (blue/green building on right side) on 421 for fresh shrimp and cut bait, Island Tackle & Hardware (on the island, 1-2 miles after you cross the bridge - on the right) for live shrimp. They sell them pretty quickly, so I'd call them before stopping by.

Hope this helps.

Yea. been off my anti-grumpy meds. sorry Dave. Spydermn, to your question, Live shrimp, mud minnows as stated above. For dead bait usually fresher at a seafood market than tackle shop. A tackle shop I frequent in the Kure area is the Trading Post. Think I need to take a break. best - glenn

Why do you ask??? When was the last time you went fishing?? !!! glenn
Glenn:
I am coming down 8/19-8/21. Very short weekend and it is not a serious fishing weekend. I am bringing the kids down for my little girls birthday but my son is OBSESSED with fishing. We are going to be on the beach fri night and sat, fishing with a cap on Sunday am. I just want to give them the best opportunity of catching with good bait. I am going to get some head on fresh skrimps in CLT before we head out but that will only be for Friday. Saturday I am going to get at least my son on the beach early in the AM Saturday. I am planning on fishing near/under the pier as that it the best structure I know of as we are staying close to the pier.

I am not looking for monsters, just something fun to tug on the end of the line for the kids.

Any local knowledge of where to look for structure on the beach will be welcomed and loved!

Spydermn The comment about "Why do you ask?" was not intended for you. Sorry for confusion. Sounds like you have a game plan. On your smaller rig try sand fleas as well as shrimp. Should be in area you mentioned and children like to catch them. On a larger rod, try a piece of cut bait or fish head - shark. blue... Best of luck. glenn

Don't bring shrimp from charlotte. Get fresh shrimp form Seaview crab. Blue building on rt about 2 miles before bridge. Also have a ice vending machine next door. 2 bucks for 20 lbs of ice. Kids should stay busy with pinkish and such.

Good advice above on fresh bait. Also, for fishing with kids, I always like the little beach on the river just past the Ft. Fisher ferry, next to the rock wall that extends into the river.

My 8 year old daughter has a short attention span & if she doesn't see a fish come in, in 5 minutes she wants to quit. At this spot, with small hooks & shrimp I can always catch a mixed bag of odd stuff usually in just a few minutes: small sharks, stingrays, eels, sea robins, blowtoads, croaker, pigfish & of course pinfish. You can also catch a lot of fiddler crabs here & I've caught nice sheepshead against the rock wall itself on fiddlers.

I make the charlotte -> ft. fisher run fairly often, so I'll jump in here. I typically stop at seaview crab co. for shrimp and mullet (easy access on carolina beach rd ). I've found them to be hit or miss on the mullet, but pretty dependable on fresh shrimp. If they don't have mullet, check B&B bait and tackle which is kinda behind the food lion, turn on dow rd. and you'll see it on your right. I found some cob size there one year when no one else had any. Seems like I saw some in Ft. Fisher Trading Post one year as well. Regardless, I encourage you to stop by there ( trading post ) and buy something even if it is just snacks and a drink b/c they have free air which is friggin awesome so close to ft. fisher. Makes airing up before the run back to charlotte super-easy.

I don't know the area, so I'll defer to "duneyetI" . . .

Here is the basic route for you, via Googlemaps :
