Decided to head out there today just to see if I could get lucky, got out there around 4pm and brought some frozen menhaden with me. About 30 minutes in my friend hooked a blue and pulled it in. It was an alright size, pretty fat in the middle. About 20 mins later I hooked one a little smaller and nothing else for the next 30 mins. Fish Recreation

Awesome catch. Looks like you got yourself a White Catfish, that's why it looks so fat. Just a bit different from a blue catfish, as they are in a different genus. A White cat is in the genus of bullhead catfishes, note the big head. They are a pretty cool fish, don't get as big as blues, but the one you caught is fairly big for a white cat. Also these are the ONLY native catfish in VA's tidal rivers.
