Merry Christmas!
My grandson and I caught several sharks from the surf (strictly casting) with our largest a shade over eight feet. I use a Ambassadeur 8600 (original ;made in Sweden @ 30 years ago) I also have a 9/0,several 6/0s (maybe four or five) and a bunch of 4/0s. Squidders,Jigmasters, etc , all of which I NEVER carry to the beach. Now ,if you are set on kayaking baits, I think I wound buy a 6/0 secondhand, in good shape, and TRY IT before you blow the wad on Internationals. ( I have a lot of experience with Internationals, and I would try Senators FIRST. Calms your nerves if somebody drops it in the surf and sand!!!

Right now i use an older St Croix 10' 1 -8 oz heavy action conv rod , with a Penn 990 mag reel with 40# mono. I'll probably step up to an 11' or 12' conv 2 -12 0z conv rod and use the same reel. Reel cast like a dream when set up right.

Penn 6/0w or 9/0 are the best entry level reels you are going to find. They can catch large sharks if conditions are right and maybe a bit of luck is on your hands. Roller guides are fine contrary to popular belief. Just keep them clean. penn 6/0w will get around 550 yards of 50lb line on the spool. you could increase that by having a base braid layer with mono topshot. general rule is to kayak out about 1/3 of your capacity leaving 2/3 to fight a bigger shark. Enjoy.

Keep the 990mag. Load it with 30#-40# braid, NOT heavier!!! Put a 100yd top shot of 25-30# mono with a 80-100# shock leader. You need 600-700yds of line. This will be one hell of a casting rig, which is a vital tool for a shark fisherman to have. Best fish on a similar outfit was 85" fork length hammerhead. We got lucky.

That 990 setup seems kind of light, depending on the size sharks encountered. I don't think casting is an issue for the OP, because he mentioned yakking baits out. Also, a long rod, which is great for casting, will kick your butt during the fight because of the loss of leverage. Short stand-up rods, up to a boat rod / trolling rod of 7 ft or less should work fine for his application. The drags are much larger in a Penn114HLW (wide 6/0 ), Penn 115 ( 9/0 ). or Daiwa 900H ( 9/0 ).

Tight Lines !
