As plotalot said it is basically a secondary drag system that allows the fish to run with the bait and then once you are hooked up you engage your main drag. I think they are more popular for drift fishing live bait from a boat, but I have used mine from the surf/bank as well.

Thought I might mention that I have experienced less than adequate results while using a bait drag with circle hooks. Perhaps it is my technique, but I think circles need just a bit more tension on the line than a bait drag can offer and switching to the main drag suddenly is similar to trying to set the hook. I currently only use the bait drag with J or treble hooks and opt for using just the main drag when I employ a circle.

I have 2 Okuma's with the BaitFeeder feature and dead stick them when fishing for Blues and Rock fish in the Bay and Atlantic. I use only circle hooks.

I don't fish as offen as some folks, so as for losing fish due this feature is not a problem for me.

Plus with bad knees, I don't have to run to my rod to save it from going for swim.

Cool, thanks for the info. Was just browsing online and saw some stuff on them. Then I thought, "Maybe I need a new reel." It's like that when you're bored at work, waiting to fish over the weekend. This time, I think I'll stick with what I got.
