I went through the SHTF gear in the truck recently to trim some of its excess weight. The backpack (Get Home Bag) weight, including 2L of water was 42 lbs. I have four typical hiking home scenarios based on my routine one would be a day hike. Two would be overnighters. The fourth could take 3 nights. Selective culling & substitution eliminated 5 lbs. The biggest reduction came from replacing various 3/8", solid braided, nylon ropes with 3/4" mule tape. Downsizing a roll of duct tape in favor of several feet wrapped around a plastic business card was a big savings, percentage-wise. I eliminated a roll of electrical tape. I plan to add a half pound, net wt, by replacing my machete w/ a hatchet. With a machete I can craft a stake to guy a tarp over my hammock but it's the wrong tool to drive a stake into Georgia clay. Hopefully, I'll only need this stuff as much as I need a fire extinguisher or a life insurance policy.
Happy trails!
