The Pacific salmon is genus Onchorhynchus...
I have some Alvey sales lit where they use the
word "salmon" but it is unclear if that is a
name for a local fish or if any Genus
Onchorhynchus ever get that far south. I do
know that they go as far west as Japan...
If you REALLY want to find out, search
salmon AND Australia AND Onchorhynchus
and see what turns up. You might want to
try several search engines since they all
index the web differently, and others just
pass the query to Google and use Googles
results (ie, they're bogus).
I remember an Aussie show called "Big Fish Down Under." Unbelievable fishing in the surf on little islands along the Great Barrier Reef. As with all things in the Land of Oz, the fish all had strange names that just didn't seem to fit the species shown (like calling a 50 pound fish with giant teeth a "perch"), so I'd sure be interested in what they'd consider a salmon. One show was strictly devoted to the barramundi, pure evil with fins and a tail. Anything they couldn't immediately identify was a "jack"... Probably one of the few true fishing frontiers left!
