If you haven't already get your fishing pass. Don't cross the lines of course certain areas of the beach can be a no go for fishermen. As in it could be an area off limits to fishing and navy police will escort you out. Bring your bug spray because bugs are heavy. Other than that fish during incoming tide and fish should bite especially those blues this time of year. If done right flounder might be on your line.

Thanks for the replies fellas! I was not aware that I needed a fishing pass. Where may I get one?
At the Rec center across the street from the exchange.

One thing to note, I've fished here a few times and my most luck is when I drag the hole between the rocks. When you get there, you will see deposits of large rocks as a surf break maybe to help control erosion. The area in between those rocks is much much deeper. Like if you drew an oval with the rocks being the two end points, big holes. I would stand near the rocks on one end, cast straight ahead into the hole. Then before I closed the reel, I would walk to the other side of the oval. Thus I would work it across the deep portion of the hole.

I've hit a few Flounder doing this. Never hit a flounder (from this location) casting past the hole. Watch the waves, you will see the dimensions of the hole.

Just called Sandpiper Rec center and the guy on the counter told me that I do not need a fishing permit if I am fishing saltwater. Only need the $8 pass for freshwater. Can anyone confirm or deny this? lol Hate to get there and need a pass.

He is correct, you no longer need to have a saltwater pass from Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek and Fort Story to fish on any Naval Base in Hampton Roads. You do however do need a Virginia saltwater license.

Interesting! I've been robbed $8 lol. I'm gonna have to fish there twice as much to make up for it. Seriously though, I would not be surprised if the guy at the counter that I talked to just had old data or assumed I meant fresh. No biggy and thanks for the clarification.

I live here on Story and routinely fish here. The other advice is spot on. Also, people have caught some fairly large drum out here late in the season by reading the beach well. Croaker are always easy.

Make sure you're eligible to come on the base in the first place. I know that should go without saying, but I'll be out there and will routinely kick people out that shouldn't be here. This is more or less a tip for other people reading this: Ft. Story beach is not public access. Eligible ID card holders only... And their guests. So if you want to fish it (there really are better places, though) find your nearest military buddy and have them escort you on.

Honestly, though, the fishing isn't great here. I fish here because I live right on the water, so it's a very convenient thing. If I wanted better catches I would just go elsewhere.

Wouldn't pull my leg would ya about fishing the beach? I've fished here since 2000. I've had some very good luck. Bait fishing is hit and miss but big rod wise I've tore up the red and black drum with 4 cobes in the mix. Fish finder rig with half a crab slung on a shorty rig for distance 5-8 oz weight (sliding). Look every place has good days salt water resides on moons phases and barometric pressure ( rising Baro is good) Baro effects fish with bladders. Moons effect tidal flow. Any way try try again you will learn to keep a book on when and where and what worked for reference... tight lines to you all!
