Great reel no cons at all. Are you an experienced conventional caster??

No, but do you tell your wife you don't like a Christmas gift, especially when it is a fishing reel? Guess I will learn.
Make sure the breaks are in it and don't fill slam full of line. Start slow and easy and work up.

Wonderful reel. Has both centrifugal brakes and magnetic brakes. Mike's probably speaking of the centrifugal brakes. It's just little plastic things on spindles that come off the spool shaft. I found that high quality 16-17 lb mono performs best

How do I check this? I planned to use Sufix Tritanium, Gold, 14#, will this be ok?

Surfchunker.... See the key words above? Ya might want to re-read it
I don't think he will be getting an Akios.

Bosco.. The newer Blue 6500s are decent reels but X2 on Mikes comment on it being a Blue Yonder... Although it is being marketed as one. I'm sure wifey put some thought and love into getting it for you..The learning curve won't be bad...

Bosco, the original Blue Yonder did not have magnetic brakes. It only had centrifugal brakes. They are both good reels, but some of us old guys like the original one better. Personally, I dont like the magnetic brakes, but that is just me. Other people will swear by them.

Mike. I'm with ya, I just figured considering it was a Christmas gift it was the current retail model.

Bosco. If it came NIB don't worry about checking for the brakes. I use the 17lb suffix tri or 16lb Berkeley pro spec just because it gives me a little more wiggle room if I over run the spool on my cast. 14 should be fine if you're careful just remember it has 20lb of full drag. The little slide on the top left of the frame is the magnetic brake. I personally find it silly to have both mags and centrifugal brakes so I normally keep the mag all the way down, but you will have to play around to find what you're comfortable with.

After I saw the retail on these reels, $249.00 I was concerned. But after talking to wife, she said, she found on Amazon for $213.00 plus if you applied for a Amazon credit card she got a $50.00 gift card and applied it to the reel price. So in the end she got the $249.00 reel for $163.00 with free shipping, so overall I guess she didn't do too bad. Think I will keep both of them....wife and reel..

Dang right she's a Keeper..!!!
Does She have have a sister ? :D

Now I think you need to buy her (wifey) a New Rainshadow 1508 to learn how to cast that reel.
Valentine's Day is just around the corner!!
