I plan on doing some surf fishing this summer and want to make sure I have a suitable rod. From research the only places within an hour of me are around Annapolis, Md or kent island plus I'm spending a week at the beach in Delaware. I currently have an 8' spinning rod-offshore angler tightline (5+1 bearings, 3/4-2oz lures). Will this be enough or will I need a 10' that can handle 2-6oz? I was looking at cabela's brand (9+1 bearings) I don't plan on being this close to the ocean for more than a year or so and don't want to spend more than $100 because after that it'll only be used every other year during a beach trip. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

here's the link for cabela's. Anyone own this and like/dislike?

Thanks jollymon. I wish I could get to the ocean more but living in Bel Air, md everything is about 2+hrs away. Too much for a day trip
Lot of water near Bel air....... Don't have to be an ocean to need a suitable rod. Wherever you move in the future u will always have use for a good rod. Plenty of big fish all over this country. Some desired, some coarse.

2na will soon correct me but ur obvious choice is a 50/50 split Ugly Stick BigWater. Throws 10 or more.....parabolic for a guys like us who dont know how to benefit from a full blown, fast tip graphite. Composites are easy on beginners and proficient. And besides....you'll eff up a nice rod just like me

Either way....learn yourself and what u throw. A 450$ ballistic is a bad investment for some. I get it ....some of us just plain suck at casting. Putting fish in the cooler and making the trip is way more beneficial

...I really don't want to get involved, but hijacking other people's threads to say pointless things doesn't have much value in my opinion. I think everyone gets it. You have a vandetta against 2na. Just my 2 cents. Other people might hold off from putting in their 2 cents with your pointless posts on other people's threads. You already have other threads about 2na and those are all yours, lol.

Get the 10' soak cut bait with it and use the 8' to throw metal or fish it short with bait. But above all get to the Ocean more.
+1. That's what I do. Soak bait with 10' - 11' rod and throw lures with my 9' from the surf. I am actually getting a CCP 13' rod (3oz - 6oz) to reach out further for times when I really need to sling bait out there (don't need to sling it out all the time, but I feel like 10' is not enough at times). You may want to consider a longer rod for more veratility on the surf.

Agreed digiRAMbo. He's kind of taking away from the whole point of this thread. I appreciate your suggestion. I'd like to get something bigger but my budget kind of tops out at $100. That and I can't spend all season learning to cast something huge or I'll never get a chance to hook into anything!

Stopped by one of the Gander Mountain stores listed on the will be closing list and noticed they had Penn Battle II Spinning combos on sale in a middle isle display. $79.99 for the one I looked at (can't recall rod length so assumption here is 7'). They also currently have a $20 off when $50 spent, so this would put the 10' combo below $100. I didn't see the sale price online (7' shows $119.99 online). For what it's worth...

Based on OP Cabelas hyperlink, not sure if you're considering just a rod or combo. Salt Striker rods are quality IMO but no idea on their reels.

If just rod, my preferred go to 10' is Penn Prevail.

The only think that would really stop you from having fun with the 8 foot rod would be heavy surf, or strong rips pulling your bait around. not sure what it is like where you will be fishing, but not being able to spike some real weight out there in rougher conditions can take the fun out of it.

If you're just using it a week a year, there should be nothing wrong with that Cabeleas combo, or you can't really go wrong with a 10 foot ugly stik and a cheaper reel. You can pop for a nicer reel the following year if you wanted, as that ugly stik will still be just fine. Wal-Marts by the coast usually have a good stock of inexpensive rods and reels, a 10 footer under a hundo would be really easy to find.

Like someone else said, you can throw lures with the 8 footer, or soak bait in calmer waters, and have that big gun soaking the whole time no matter what the surf is like.

It's about 5 hours to the salt for me, but I get out there at least 4 or 5 times a year as my wife loves the little town we stay in, even if it's most often just long weekends.

Gotcha. FYI, Cabela's has "Surf combo"s with surf rods. You will see that there's Cabela's Salt Striker (the one you linked to) and Cabela's Salt Striker Surf. You might look into what the differences are.

Another suggestion: Penn Prevail 10' 1-5 oz (PRESF1530S10) for $80 and Penn Pursuit II 6000 (PURII6000) for $50. $130, which is slightly outside your budget, but if you look up reviews from various sites, you'll see that they have good rating. 6000 reel is the same price as the 5000 and only 2 oz heavier. I ended up trading the rod with a casting rod, but I still have the reel and it's a good value reel in my opinion.
