Anybody have any experience with these on the Outer Banks? I'm heading to Carova at the end of the month, and would like to anticipate any possible problems driving in the sand (p.s., I've had 30 years experience at the beach with my old Ford and Dodge Ram 4x4s).

I had a 2014 Pilot and had no problem in Hatteras on several trips. I'm sure you know the routine, air down to 20 psi and let it roll!

So long as it is true 4wd (not awd) and you air down you should be good to go. Stay out of the deep ruts as you will not have the clearance of some of the other trucks out there

I thought all Honda Pilots were AWD, not 4x4...

Pilots have a feature that allow you to lock in the rear wheels. You can then turn the traction control off and they behave more like 4wd than Awd. Mine did fine at Corova and Ramp 49 but was sketchy elsewhere because of poor ground clearance.

We ran my wife's 2015 Honda Pilot in OBX sand this past summer with no problems at all. I aired down to approximately 20 PSI in each tire and kept to the established tracks. In addition, I crossed loose pack sand in the "middle ground " without a problem. I was running pretty new Yokohama Geolander GO15 All Terrain (AT) tires as well.
