How this sound. I just bought a Penn Battalion conv 12' 2-10 oz surf rod with my gift card from Cabela's. I'm mating her up with a Penn 990 Mag reel i have. I know the 990 is a little heavy, but it should balance out with this rod for a heaver. Combo should do the trick. What # mono 20# or 25#. I don't like braid. Thank's.:fishing:

The Penn Battalion looks to be rated from 4 - 10oz, rather than 2-10 oz.

There is also another 12' model rated for 6-10oz. My concern would be for how accurately the Casting Weight is rated for the rod you have and how much weight, including bait, you'll be casting. I don't have any first-hand experience with the Battalion rods so, hopefully, someone else can give their impression of the rod in actual use.

The Penn 990 holds a LOT of line . . . http://store.scottsbt.com/PennParts/ReelSpecs/PennMagPower.aspx .

Eventually, you'll probably want to consider a different reel, which could provide more distance with less weight. Since the 990 holds 325yd of 30# Mono, it would likely hold 375-400yd +/- of 25# Mono and 400-475yd +/- of 20# Mono. That's fine, if you need that much line capacity for the fishing you'll be doing . . . Do some more research, if needed !

Thank's dave. Your right it is 4-10 oz. I'll probably use the combo for shark's in the summer. I have a 10' St croix conv i use with a Penn sqwidder 140. The sharks we catch On the De sea shore are not giants. Would you use 25# or 30# for the type of fishing i'll do with it. I cast a buddies last year, same rod but with a Abu conv reel on it. it cast 6 and 8 oz and bait very well. Thank's again.

Go with 17 mono and a 50 lb BBG shocker. That is all you need to tackle DE and AI sharks. I use heavy duty 100 lb mono for tying larger hooks for those guys...
