30 miles from OBX as the crow flies, or 80 miles by Jeep!
While as a state delegate and later as a state senator, Ralph Northam championed getting the menhaden fishery out of the legislature's hands in into the hands of Virginia Marine Rescources Commission. I just read where Ralph petitioned U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross to allow a moratorium on any more taking of fish by Omega Protein for the remainder of the calendar year since they snubbed their noses at the limits set previously. I have seen Wilbur Ross be very pro big business but in the event Ross doesn't step in, with the new look of the state house and senate, perhaps the swap from the legislature to the professionals could help. If that fails, maybe, just maybe, the new legislature may enact stricter LAWS limiting catch limits. Apparently what is in place now are "recommendations "? It may be a slim glimmer of hope, but it's at least a glimmer! Imagine the striper fisheries in the bay if they actually had menhaden available to eat!
The Menhaden Season is essentially over for this year in VA. His letter was in reference to the 2020 season. Check out the Virginia Saltwater Sportfishing Assn or VA Menhaden Alliance pages on Facebook for more info and a copy of the Governors letter to Wilbur Ross.
