In Lee Tolliver's weekly fishing report in the Va. Pilot, he says that the dolphin are on weedlines just a few miles off the coast. Is there any truth to this?

I ask because several years back, the chicken dolphin came in so close they were catching them from the piers. Several days of east winds could lead to a repeat.

I seen where Cato has been picking up some "inshore" dolphin as he is calling em.

matt, stop extending the truth rofl. me and you called this on the nose right when it happened. i know you wasnt there, but you came later that day. hey, all hell broke loose on the pier today..people might be getting kicked off, some staff getting asked to leave, was crazy! GLAD I WAS AT WORK, and didnt get involved LOL!

Good ole' Bouge Inlet! (yes, i called it Bouge)

i watched that fish hit french's plug, and the other guy's plug. that fish way MAYBE 5lbs, if that. you know , that story has grown every time i walked out on the pier.

first it was just two little peanuts, then a 5lber on a gotcha.

now its at, a couple were smashing plugs but only small ones :P

Just got back from sharking, got their to dang late and missed the dusk bite. ill try tomorrow. LOVE my new heaver.

Give me a call in the AM

It is strange that I have seen this twice. First, we had large schools of 13-18 inch dolphin come through at Avalon Pier a couple of years ago during 4th of July week. Apparently there had been a steady ENE wind for a couple of days and the water temp had risen to around 80. Despite there being scores of them in the water, only about 6 or 7 were caught.

Then last weekend, I was leaning over the rail at Bogue Inlet when I saw a strange looking green fish lit up and slashing at little minnows right beside of the pier. It took a second to register that it was a Dolphin because it had strange black markings on its back. I would estimate that it was around 25 or so inches long, between 3-5 lbs at the most (I got a 10 lb blue back in May and it was not nearly that big). I grabbed my gotcha rod and the thing smashed the gotcha of the guy beside of me, but got off almost immediately. I threw my gotcha out and it blew up my gotcha with about 10 people watching, and I froze = no hook up. Seconds later a big spanish made a run at my gotcha but turned away. I choke when the big money is on the line with gotchas. Later in the afternoon, another fellow got a tiny little shingle dolphin on a gotcha, it could not have been 15 inches long. I did not see a third one.

Jesse and Matt, what happened out on the pier? Shoot me an email.

There are all kinds of instances of fish where they aren't supposed to be and a few regular occurences that the average guy would be shocked to hear about. Several Fla. piers get blackfins and sailfish aren't anything new on some of their piers. There was even a 150lb+ yellowfin supposedly caught off a bridge over the ICW at Lake Worth last year. About any large southern bay with a deep shipping channel is subject to invasion by kings and cobia along with fat alberts and jacks. Sadly though you don't see nearly as many amberjack caught of N.C.'s piers as there were in the 70's.In fact not nearly as many fish period. I guess we needn't go there though.

I remember seeing a fishing show on ESPN or somewhere where the guys were fishing the flats in the Keys and had a sail come through, guy casted towards him but what billfish in his right mind (you know, because hes in the flats too:rolleyes: ) would want a crab imitation fly?

Yeah, this definitely happened. It's the incident I referred to above. Digger and Salty and I actually went fishing that day. Digger wanted to go Nags Head, while Salty and I voted for the Seagull Pier. I don't think Salty and I will ever live that decision down. ;)
