A new rant?

Yep; I'm a tourist.
I have respect for the people in the areas I go to fish or visit and I know they don't have all the time in the world because they have to work and pay their bills too.

A young lad was out on the beach doing his best to catch a fish. He wasn't having very good luck and approached a couple of the local guys and asked what he was doing wrong.
The guys told him he was fishing at the wrong time; he needed to be fishing on the low tide and ignored him totally after that. I watched them continue fishing and the young fellow kept trying with no luck at all. (This was determined after talking with the young fellow.)
The two locals packed up and left.

The young fellow sat there casting out and watching his rig drift back in in short order. He finally stood up, laid his rod on the ground and walked over to me. "Mister, he began, can you help me a little bit?" "I want to catch a fish but I don't know what I'm doing wrong."

The kid seemed honest and was polite. He was also about 15 or 16 and by himself and he wasn't out trying to get in trouble or cause problems for anyone. I asked him to bring his rig over and I'd have a look at it and see if I could fix him up. His rod was a "Wally-World" $29.00 special, rigged with about a 2/0 hook and a dropper loop with about 8 1/4 ounce egg sinkers about 5 inches away. He was using mullet for bait and had a large bag of it.

I took mercy on him and cut his attempt at a rig off and replaced it with a single drop rig with a 2/0 circle hook and 2 oz of weight. I showed him how to cut bait and told him where to cast to for a decent chance of catching something.
He did and he was thrilled! He caught about 6 Weakfish in reasonably short order. He had a great time and I kind of enjoyed getting him off on the right foot. About 8 PM, I decided to call it an evening and started to pack up. The youg guy came up and offered to pay me for the rig and all the help I had given him. I declined. I was sort of pleased to be able to help someone get started on the right path and it was nice to see him have a good time.

It wasn't a big deal for me to show him the basics or to take the time to help him out. Yes I'm a Canadian tourist. Yes I enjoy fishing and I used to hunt as well. In these times when the tree huggers and the anti fishing crowds are trying to get all access to every possible area closed, we need all the people involved in the sport.

We don't need to be ignorant and intentionally spread misinformation and try disillusion people that are interested in the sport, especially the young people.

You did the right thing! I'd also bet you got as much, if not more, enjoyment out of his success as he did. Here's to you! (a Molson)

I think you did the right thing Bobmac. I've seen way too many locals blow people off when they simply ask an innocent question. I think if we as fishermen want to see our love be protected in the future, we need to get as many people interested in fishing as possible. Your kindness probably didn't take more than a couple of minutes, and like sprtsracer said, you likely got as much enjoyment out of it as the young man did. You did that person, yourself, and fishing in general a service that will likely pay off big in the end!

A great story. I've also been lucky enough to have gotten good advice from a friendly local when I didn't know what I was doing. Hopefully this young man will continue increase his knowledge and happily share it with others, thanks to your original kindness.

Good call, Blackbird. As you say, I've learned a great deal from the locals and old-timers and am always glad to pass what I know along. Way to go, bobmac!

Good deeds dont go unnoticed. I think it is important to remember that alot of folks didn't have the privalage of a father or mentor to teach them the finer points of angling like many of us did. Our sport can be attractive to those who see us get a tug on our line. Then when they try without proper guidance they get quickly frustrated. I thank all of those including some of the posters on this site who have continued my angling education. No matter how good you are you can always learn more. THANKS!!

Good point...if the kid is around 15 (or any aged kid for that matter) and fishing by himself...then where are his father or mother or both? Take the kid under your wing! At least he has an interest in fishing! Plus...you never know...he might be fishing for food for the family table. Take some time to get to know the kid, and if he needs a mentor, then BE the mentor...in a non-intrusive way. Let him know when you'll be out there again and offer to help when he needs it!

Great story, and everything you said was very well put. A couple minutes of your time will last a lifetime for him.

Kudos! I have an uncle who did something similar for me back around 1960. That help lasts a lifetime.
