Bill is out of the business, as I understand it. The knobby isn't hard to install but it usually takes a kit or a machinist.

Do you guys really feel you need a knobby adjust or are you just playing around with the reel? I just got a used slidy mag and put it on a 13' LDX. And I run it full throttle all the time. Seems pretty darned controllable to me. I have not cast with the wind right on my nose yet but pretty close. Oh and I have only been using 3oz pyramids cause thats all I have needed to hold bottom. Could that be why I haven't needed the mag control yet??

If you can run your 525mag wide open you need new bearings, In fishing conditions I run mine on 5 or 6 usually. YOu may just need to clean it good though

If you're running a stock 525 on 0 with anything less than 25# mono, you have one heck of a smooth cast. I run six magnets in mine, and with the wind at my back I can usually throw it on 2. For general fishing 4 is the minimum and 5 is regular.

The knobby may not give you much more variability in control over the slider, but it is easier to make adjustments on the fly. Not necessarily useful in a fishing situation but on the field it helps. Of course, I don't know anyone in the US that throws a 525 on the competition field.

Maybe but it seems just as smooth as two of my brand new 6500 csct's so I have to question that. Seems all I need is to ever so gently feather the spool with my thumb and it casts just like my Abu's. Maybe it does need a cleaning. I will try that this winter. Thanks for your input

PS using 17lb Sufix tri+

I'd recommend cleaning out your bearings and relubing them with Red Rocket Fuel. If I'm not mistaken, the 525s I bought came with a thicker lube in the bearings from the factory.

Also, when casting a mag-controlled reel the goal is not having to feather the reel at all during the cast. Literally just set the mags and let fly.

I heard Penn did something to slow them down because they were just to fast for most people. As for not feathering the spool..well..I been casting like that for almost 50 yrs. I'm not sure I can stop myself.

Try adding extra magnets, you can get them from Lee Valley Tools or Radio Shack 1/4" X 1/4" rare earth magnets. no need to glue them they will stick by themselves
